Inicio Monuments Civil Heritage Plaza de España
It is the historic and social centre of the city of Valdepeñas.
In times past, the House of the Commander stood here, built over the last remnants of an early fortress and later rebuilt as the Marquis of Santa Cruz Palace, lord of Valdepeñas. It was located at the corner between the Plaza and Virgen Street, which is still known in the area as “the slope of the Palace.”
Throughout its history, it has witnessed acts of faith, executions, celebrations, fairs, and more.
This urban space houses the town hall, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, an interesting central fountain dating from 1926 with a wine press as its motif, and numerous other businesses and private establishments that are sheltered in its arcades and residences. The colours white and indigo give it a typically Manchego flavour.
